Lehigh County Court Records

Lehigh County court records encompass filed documents, electronic records, and case information produced and preserved by courts in the County. These records are primarily maintained by the Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas in Lehigh County as official reports of court proceedings and judicial actions held in the county. Court records and case information may be referenced by attorneys in subsequent litigations; they also help the public understand the court system and the processes for resolving cases in Lehigh County.

Lehigh County court records are created in accordance with the relevant court rulesand are publicly available under the State’s public records law. Interested persons may request access to court records as well as other public records-vital records, federal case files, and arrest information.

Are Lehigh County Court Records Public?

Yes. The Pennsylvania Right-To-Know Law, and Section 3.0 of the Public Access Policy of the Unified Judicial System of Pennsylvania govern public access to Lehigh County court records. Under these laws, interested members of the public may review or copy desired court records by contacting the custodial office.

Not all court records may be available for public inspection especially if they are confidential or contain sensitive information. It might be helpful to confirm record availability and access procedures from the appropriate record custodian before sending requests. Common examples of court documents and case file information that may be confidential and unavailable to the public include:

  • Social security numbers
  • Driver’s license number
  • Psychological and medical reports
  • Financial account information
  • Contact information of abuse victims
  • Records of juveniles and children/youth services’ records
  • State identification numbers
  • Case party agreements
  • Sealed or confidential records under the law
  • Correspondence, memoranda, notes, drafts, and workflow sheets created by judges or their assistants

What Information is Available in Lehigh County Court Records?

Lehigh County court records typically reveal the following information:

In-Person Access

The County Courthouse in Lehigh County maintains public search terminals for access to court documents and case information. Interested persons may visit the courthouse within official hours to use these terminals. Another alternative is to query the clerk’s office to inspect or copy records. Note that inspecting records in person may be free of charge but requesting copies of records usually attracts additional fees.

Mail and Phone Requests

Requestors may submit mail requests for public access to court records to the clerk’s office. These requests are to be sent in stamped self-addressed envelopes with adequate descriptions and search details of the requested records. Phone requests are usually limited to inquiries about record request procedures and may not be a viable option for record searches.

Fees for Court Records in Lehigh County

Generally, Lehigh County courts provide uncertified copies of court records to interested persons at $0.25 per page. A certification fee of $1.50 per page, in addition to the copying fee, is attached to certified copies of court records. To access court records online via the Odyssey public access tool, concerned persons may be required to pay a subscription fee of $300 yearly. Certified copies of marriage records are provided at $10 per copy or $10.10 if the record is sent via priority mail. Exemplified copies of marriage records cost $75 per copy.

  • The Magisterial District Courts-there are 14 Magisterial District Courts that oversee the townships, boroughs, and cities in Lehigh County. These Magisterial District Courts handle civil and criminal cases such as DUI cases, summary offenses, minor misdemeanors, small claims civil suits up to $12,000, preliminary hearings, landlord/ tenant disputes, and ordinance violations.

Criminal Records Access in Lehigh County

The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) provides statewide official criminal history record checks via its PATCH website. Queries for official criminal history records are to be sent to the PSP and not the county clerk or courthouses in Lehigh County. The PSP charges a non-refundable fee of $22 per search for access to official criminal history information on its PATCH portal. Notarized copies of the records are also provided for an additional $5 per copy. Requests can also be sent by mailing a duly completed request form and appropriate fees to the Pennsylvania State Police Central Repository - RCPU located at 1800 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, PA 17110-9758. Local criminal case files and records may be obtained by querying the Lehigh County Odyssey Public Access portal or making in-person requests at the county courthouse.

Lehigh County Probate Records

Lehigh County probate records consist of case information and filings related to wills and probate filings, administration of an intestate’s assets, guardianships, trusts, estate records, conservatorships and adoptions. The Register of Wills and Orphans’ Court Division of the Lehigh County Court of Common Pleas maintains records of probate filings such as wills, estates, guardianships, and adoption records. Recent filings and probate records may be available online via the Lehigh County Odyssey Public Access tool.

Lehigh County Family Court Records

The Lehigh County Family Court Division of the Court of Common Pleas manages family law matters such as divorce, child custody, domestic abuse and protection from abuse orders. While most of these records may be publicly available, confidential records, sealed records, records of juvenile and sensitive case information are typically redacted and exempt from the public. Family court records may be available online via the Odyssey Public Access search tool. Requestors may also visit the courthouse to inspect/copy records or send mail requests to the clerk’s office. Certified copies of family court records are available at the clerk’s office at $1.50 per copy excluding copy fees.

Federal Court Records in Lehigh County

The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania is the court of federal jurisdiction in Lehigh County. This District Court hears cases of federal criminal prosecutions, constitutional/civil right violations and bankruptcy issues. Federal court records are typically available online via PACER (Public Access to Court Electronic Records). Alternatively, interested persons may query the clerk of the court for access to publicly available court records and case information.
